When to Replace Your Wiper Blades?

worn wiper blades

Everyone forgets they even have wiper blades until the skies open up, you turn on your wiper blades to listen to that awful squeal that sounds a bit like the Kendrick Lamar song, but its not the Kendrick Lamar song, its the wiper blades you were meant to replace 6 months ago.

Its times like these, you wish you had new wiper blades, these sticky situations you’d pay anything to get out of.

We suggest replacing your wiper blades every 6-12 months, you can make blades last longer if you service them well, and leave your car garaged.

BUT.. before you go and buy wiper blades, do you actually NEED new wiper blades, or do your existing blades just need a good clean? The last thing you want to do is buy blades and your existing blades are ok still have life in them. We’re an honest business, the last thing we want to do is sell you something you don’t need.

Having said this, a recent survey found one in five cars had deficient windshield wipers, so you either have dirty wiper blades or you need new wiper blades.

How can you tell your blades are worn out?

Firstly test them before making any changes. If you find your blades do any of the following then it might be time..

  • Squeaking
  • Skipping
  • Streaking
  • Splitting
  • Smearing

but FIRST.. we suggest cleaning the blade and windscreen thoroughly using warm soapy water, this will remove most contaminants that affect performance.

Mix some some dish soap with warm water (not too hot) in a bucket and a soft sponge, microfiber towel, or you could even use a blue chux.

Lift up your wiper blades*, hose down the windscreen to get rid of any leaves or larger debris, once you’ve done that, you can move onto wiping down the windscreen and then wiping down the wiper blades.

Check the wiper rubber that makes contact with your windscreen for any visibile damage as the damage might be whats causing all of your whoes.

Test your wiper blades after cleaning the windscreen. If you find the wiper blades are acceptable, then your all good to go.

HOWEVER .. If your wiper blades are still affecting visibility then its time for new blades. We stock blades for all makes and models.

*Some cars need to be put into a service position otherwise it may damage or interfere with the bonnet, common among the European vehicles where the wiper is hidden under the bonnet.
